Ten children from Year 6 had the opportunity to attend the AIM High Writing Day, joining children from schools across Leicester for a day of creativity and collaboration. The event was led by William, a professional writer best known for his work as a scriptwriter for Doctor Who audio dramas on the BBC. His expertise and enthusiasm set the tone for an inspiring experience.
The first session, the ‘One-Liner Exercise’, was a lively introduction where pupils played a game that evolved into creating and performing a script. William shared fascinating Doctor Who stories, sparking imaginations and linking the activity to professional writing.
Next came ‘Energetic Interviewing’, which had everyone moving around the room asking and answering questions. One question encouraged a huge imaginative lie while another asked for a small truth, generating ideas for future stories and plenty of laughter.
In the third session, ‘Creating a Character in the Round’, pupils worked together to build a shared character before creating their own. This exercise deepened their understanding of character development and storytelling.
The day concluded the children creating their own spooky horror stories. Some of their grizzly tales were particularly terrifying! Our pupils loved the freedom to write creatively and explore whacky and wonderful ideas. They returned full of confidence and excitement, having gained new skills and unforgettable memories.
