WW2 experience day – Year 6 visit Beaumanor Hall

Our Year 6 pupils recently stepped back in time for an unforgettable World War II experience at Beaumanor Hall. The day was packed with immersive, hands-on activities that brought history to life in the most engaging way.
The children began their day as wartime code breakers, working in the very room where the historic message announcing the end of WWII was received. Surrounded by authentic equipment and atmosphere, they learned about the vital role of intelligence and communication during the war.
Next, they visited a 1940s-style classroom, where they experienced what school life was like for children during the war. From strict routines to chalkboards and wartime discipline, it was a fascinating contrast to their own school day.
The pupils also explored the challenges of wartime cooking. They created recipes using rationed ingredients, learning how families had to be resourceful and creative with limited supplies. After planning their meals, they visited the on-site shop to “purchase” their ingredients using ration books—an eye-opening activity that sparked lots of discussion.
One of the most memorable parts of the day was experiencing an air raid in a real-life bunker. As the authentic air raid siren wailed, the children took shelter and imagined what it must have felt like to live through such uncertain times.
Throughout the day, the children were fully immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories of the 1940s. They returned to school buzzing with excitement and full of new knowledge about life during WWII. It was a truly enriching experience that deepened their understanding of history in a meaningful and memorable way.
