Year 4 visit the zoo

On Monday, our Year 4 pupils went on an exciting trip to Twycross Zoo to take part in a fascinating Rainforest Experience.

The day began with an interactive workshop where the children explored the different layers of the rainforest, from the dark forest floor to the towering emergent layer. They discovered the amazing animals that live in each part and learned how these creatures are perfectly adapted to their environment.

One of the biggest surprises was discovering just how important rainforests are to our everyday lives. The children were amazed to learn that many everyday items come from the rainforest, including bananas, mangoes, chocolate and paper. They were even more shocked to find out that metals used in mobile phones and rechargeable devices are linked to rainforest areas. This prompted thoughtful discussions about how we can all help protect the rainforest, including recycling old phones and reducing waste.

Fun fact: Chocolate comes from cacao trees, which grow in tropical rainforests!

After the workshop, the children enjoyed exploring the zoo and took part in the popular Gruffalo Trail, which added a sense of adventure and fun to the day. The trail led us to the beautiful butterfly garden, where pupils observed these colourful creatures up close, a magical way to end the visit.

The trip was a fantastic way to bring our classroom learning to life. The children showed great enthusiasm, curiosity and excellent behaviour throughout the day, and we are very proud of them!
