Year 4 have visited Bosworth Battlefield to explore their study on the mighty Romans! There, they discovered the Celtic ways from no other than Queen Boudicca (a very good actor). They looked at all the different foods that the Romans brought to Britain and discovered Celtic food. We found that our everyday staple fruit was brought by the Romans. Can you guess what fruit it was?…Apples!
The children were able to explore the Celtic war strategies and even made their very own scary masks, decorating them with Celtic symbols. Did you know that the Celts used ‘wode’ (a type of dye extracted from a flower) to paint their faces. This made them look very fierce and wild in battle and it was meant to frighten their opponents.
Another exciting session at Bosworth Battlefield was the Archaeology workshop, where children were taught to use different tools and strategies to explore real Roman artefacts. The children found lots of different artefacts that suggested how sophisticated the Romans were when it came to buildings. There were also lots of earthenware pots and vessels.
The most exciting part of the archelogy was being able to make your own version of a Roman coin using clay. The children carved details that would tell others about them just as the Roman coins did.
The children learned about Roman women through Deida, who was a laundress was and married to a Roman soldier. She oversaw doing all the Roman soldier’s laundry. Would you believe what they used to wash their clothes? Wee!!! This was seen as a clean method to get rid of stains! I think we’ll stick to washing detergent-thank you!
The children went onto learn about the different types of armour and the varieties of strategies and battle formations the Roman soldiers used in war.
