Year 3 recently took part in an exciting and highly engaging Maths Roadshow, delivered by Cat Stone, L.E.A.D.’s Primary Lead Practitioner for Maths. The school hall was transformed into a vibrant learning space, with 15 different activity stations for the children to explore. Each station offered a unique mathematical challenge based on key skills including number bonds, shape, the four operations, spatial awareness, mirrors, pattern recognition and much more.
Working independently and rotating in pairs or small groups, the children were encouraged to complete each task before moving on to the next challenge. This approach not only developed their mathematical understanding but also helped to build resilience, perseverance and confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems. Every activity had its own theme and objective, encouraging pupils to think systematically, logically and methodically as they worked through the challenges.
The atmosphere throughout the day was full of enthusiasm, determination and teamwork. The children embraced the opportunity to apply their mathematical skills in a practical and enjoyable way, often challenging themselves to keep going when a task became difficult. Many pupils commented afterwards on how much they enjoyed the session, describing the activities as both fun and challenging. It was wonderful to see so many children demonstrating a positive attitude towards problem-solving and refusing to give up when faced with a tricky puzzle.
Several children excelled in the activities and were awarded special ‘Star Challenge’ stickers in recognition of their outstanding effort, resilience and mathematical thinking. The workshop was a tremendous success and provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience maths beyond the classroom. Most importantly, it helped children see mathematics as an exciting, creative and rewarding subject, leaving them inspired to continue developing their skills and confidence.
The children left the workshop smiling, motivated and eager for their next mathematical challenge!
