We welcome parents and carers to visit us so you can explore our school, meet our dedicated staff, see lessons in action, ask questions and discover why families choose Uplands L.E.A.D. Academy.
This week, our school has been immersed in the wonderful world of poetry as we celebrated National Poetry Day. Throughout the week, children across the school have enjoyed a wide range of exciting activities designed to develop their appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of poetry.
Children listened to a variety of poems, explored their meanings, discussed the language and techniques poets use, and created their own imaginative pieces of writing. They also had the opportunity to perform poetry aloud, building confidence, expression, and fluency as they shared their work with others.
A particular highlight of the week was taking part in a live lesson with the famous children’s poet and author, Michael Rosen. The children thoroughly enjoyed hearing from such a well-known poet and were inspired by his enthusiasm, creativity and love of language. We were also delighted to welcome Dan from Highfields Library, who delivered a fun and engaging poetry workshop that encouraged children to think creatively and experiment with words in new and exciting ways.
On Friday, we concluded our celebrations with our Poetry Recital Competition. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the children who took part. Every participant was fantastic. They spoke clearly, performed with confidence and read with excellent expression, bringing their chosen poems to life for the audience and judges.
Special thanks must also go to Mr Pryce for organising this wonderful event and ensuring the week was such a success. We are incredibly grateful to Dan from Highfields Library for leading his workshop and for giving his time to serve as a judge during the competition. Thank you also to Mrs Clohessy for supporting the event and helping to judge the competition so thoughtfully.
Poetry plays an important role within our curriculum. It helps children to develop a rich vocabulary, improve their reading fluency and comprehension, and express their thoughts and feelings creatively. Through exploring poetry, children learn to appreciate language, discover different perspectives and build confidence in speaking and listening. These are all vital skills that support learning across the curriculum and beyond.
We hope that the enthusiasm shown throughout the week inspires our children to continue reading, writing and enjoying poetry long after National Poetry Day has ended. The creativity, confidence and enjoyment on display this week have been truly wonderful, and we look forward to celebrating poetry again in the future.
